Testing news, new team member
Volunteers,
Good Afternoon. My name is TJ and I'm a new member of the MindModeling development team.
I'm currently investigating our system performance issues relating to the low bandwidth you may have been experiencing with the last couple of jobs we've submitted to the system. I just wanted to let you all know that we'll be submitting a couple of large jobs in the next few days. These will be jobs whose results we already know, but I want to run these jobs again and watch our resource utilization while we're cranking out data with your help.
I'm announcing this here because it was brought up in team discussion that it's possible some of you don't want to crunch numbers for us if it doesn't lead to some kind of usable result. Rest assured, your donated CPU cycles will always be put to good use while attached to our project, as each cycle you donate helps us tune and improve our system in the hopes of one day being that Go-To solution for cognitive modelers, both within the Air Force and other communities.
Please continue posting feedback about your experience with our project, and we'll keep working to make sure your participation in our project minimally impacts your donated system. |

BRIMS and Jack's back on the team
Next week the team will be presenting a demonstration of the MindModeling@Home system at the 21st Annual Conference on Behavior Representation in Modeling Simulation as we illustrate the power volunteer computing can provide cognitive science community.
Also, a few months ago I returned from graduate school after finish my dissertation focusing on the 'Automated Cognitive Model Evaluation'. Since January, I have been working full-time with the team focusing on some of the issues for make MindModeling@Home a more useful resource for a larger pool of cognitive modelers.

Nächste Woche wird das Team eine Demonstration bei der jährlichen Konferenz für Modellsimulationen abgeben.
Vor einigen Monaten hat Jack seine Dissertation über "Automatische kognitive Modellbewertung" beendet. Seit Januar arbeitet er mit dem Team zusammen, um das Projekt zu einer nutz- und wertvollen Quelle für einen größeren Pool an kognitiven Modelierern zu machen.

'Change Signal Full Mesh with Fatigue 3' was just launched. It consists over a million workunits studying the effects of a fatigued cognitive system.

MORE APPS -- Expanded Language Support
Native Python-based model support (version 2.7) added as an new distributed application. An experimental testing job is now running under the very original name 'Python'.
This capability was added to support a wider range of cognitive researchers and to expand the science being explored using MindModeling. Other languages are planned to become supported in the near future including [R] and Java as well a Python 2.6 and Python 3.2.
Also, a new mirror download site was added at Wright State to better support this addition and the bandwidth demands that come with supporting multiple applications. |

L'Alliance Francophone takes first position and is ready to show their real strength
The team L'Alliance Francophone just took first position in the team standings today and has just announced their intentions to really show their strength. They are planning on staging a credit 'Race' from 21 September to 7 October 2012 where they will dedicate their team's full power to MindModeling@Home computational research.
We are very excited about the contribution L'Alliance Francophone has brought (and will be bringing) to MindModeling@Home.

DSST-base2 job
A new DSST model was run last friday.
It would have taken over 4 years on a single computer. Thanks to all the added power it took less than 13 hours.
That is a 2,746 times speed up -- amazing. |
Am letzten Freitag lief ein DSST-Model zur Berechnung, das auf einem einzelnen Rechner 4 Jahre gebraucht hätte. Dank der Rechenpower der User hat es nur 13 Stunden gedauert.

Record Setting Week
This week recorded our top 7 best crunching days in MM history.
In that time there were 9 completed cognitive model explorations and our latest version of the very large 'Change Signal' job is now 25% of the way complete.
Milestones:
- tempo became the next member the 1M total credit club
- GATE became the first 2M credit cruncher for the project
- L'Alliance Francophone has become the #1 team in terms of both RAC and Total Credit
- Project passed the 4 TFlop mark |
In der letzten Woche wurden 9 komplette kognitive Modelle berechnet und die neueste Version des sehr großen "Change Signal"-Jobs ist zu 25% komplett.
Die Meilensteine der letzten Woche brachten MM die aktuelle Top 7 der besten Tage ein.

New 1.89 Windows App Released
A new 1.89 Windows application was released today which removes a bug causing a workunit to possibly hang at 100% complete for up to 2 hours on some Windows systems before finishing. This improved application as already produced a 25-30% average performance improvement compared to the 1.88 application.
Also, congratulations to tempo for being the first cruncher to accumulate over 3 million credit on the MindModeling project. |
Die neue 1.89 Windows-Anwendung behebt einen Fehler, bei dem WUs bei 100% für über 2 Stunden hängen blieben, bevor sie sich beenden. Auch ist sie um ca. 25-30% in der Leistung verbessert gegenüber der 1.88.
Ein Glückwunsch geht an User tempo, der über 3 Mio. Credits ercruncht hat.

Server enhancements
The MindModeling server software has recently undergone new upgrades to support more platforms and languages and increase the efficiency of our work unit creation logic. We now have a total of four unique client applications which allow our cognitive modelers to develop in multiple languages, such as Lisp, Python, and [R], plus near completion of adding Java support. This means that we will be able to support a larger community of researchers, and more work in the future.
Also, to enhance the utility of the MindModeling system to cognitive modelers and ensure the most efficient use of volunteer resources, we have integrated a new genetic algorithm optimization method to control work unit projection in the system.
We should have plenty of work over the next couple of days while we run optimizations on some our models across different data sets. |
Die Serversoftware hat neue Upgrades, um mehr Plattformen und Spraschen zu unterstützen und die Effizienz der WU-Erstellung zu erhöhen. Es gibt jetzt vier einzigartige Clientanwendungen, die den Kognitivmodellern eine Entwicklung in mehreren Sprachen (Lisp, Python, [R] und Java) erlaubt. Damit können wir auch eine größere Anzahl an Forschern erreichen, was wiederum mehr Arbeit bedeuten könnte.
Es wurde außerdem eine neuee genetischer Algorithmus-Optimierungsmethode entwickelt, die die WU-Projektion im System kontrollieren soll.
In den nächsten Tagen wird es viel Arbeit geben, während weitere Optimierungen an einigen Models durch verschiedene Datensets vorgenommen werden.

Intelligent Search
If you've been tracking the development of jobs from the progress bars on our homepage, you may have noticed that recent jobs are finishing much sooner than expected. This is due to the introduction of intelligent search algorithms to our server-side software. These algorithms allow us to find an optimal solution for a model without having to fully enumerate and compute every node in a job's parameter space. Once a solution is determined to be optimal, or optimal enough, the job terminates. These methods greatly speed up the cycle of generation, computation, and evaluation of models. Our view is that it is only through the combined use of intelligent search and distributed computing can we meet our far-term scientific and technological objectives, both as a research team and as a broader research community. While in time we will introduce better indicators of progress, for now simply understand that the progress bars are not always a guarantee of work for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, some have noted that they are experiencing problems updating their passwords from their account pages. This is due to some outdated URL redirection that is no longer necessary. Consequently, we have changed the master URL of our project to "http://mindmodeling.org/". Any webpages appended with "/beta" will still work, including communication between clients and our scheduler, but you should switch over to the new URL as soon as possible. Please let us know if any issues persist, or new ones arise. |
Dank eines intelligenten Such-Algorithmus werden derzeitige Aufgaben oft eher fertig als erwartet. Das beschleunigt den Zyklus der Erstellung, Berechnung und Evaluierung der Modelle.
Einige von euch könnten Probleme erleben beim Updaten vin Paßwörtern etc. Das kommt durch fehlende URL-Umleitung, die nicht mehr nötig ist. Die Master-URL ist jetzt "http://mindmodeling.org/". Die Beta-Unterseiten werden zwar weiterhin arbeiten, aber bitte ändert auf diese neue URL so schnell wie möglich.

Incredible Month!
Our team would like to thank all of our volunteers for contributing to an incredible month of crunching! We completed a record-breaking 52 jobs, roughly 13,000 days worth of computation, in less than one month. The work contributed to three different research lines, one of which is outlined here by our collaborator Mike Shvartsman from the University of Michigan.
Our researchers are busy analyzing all of the data and generating new models. More work is on the horizon! Thanks again! |
Das Projektteam bedankt sich bei allen Freiwilligen für das Teilnehmen an einem unglaublichen Monat! Es wurden 52 Jobs, was ca. 13.000 Tage an Berechnungen entspricht, in weniger als einem Monat komplettiert. Die Arbeit gehört zu drei verschiedenen Forschungsrichtungen, eine davon kann man hier nachlesen, beschrieben von Mike Shvartsman von der Michigan Universität.
Die Daten werden derzeit analysiert und neue Modelle erstellt.
