We are extremely proud to announce that Renderfarm.fi might well be the first renderfarm on the planet to have successfully implemented distributed rendering for Blender's new awesome render engine Cycles. Although still at a preliminary testing phase, most of the difficult work is now behind us. We've created proof of concept that our method of splitting and computing work in to small sample sets, collecting them and combining them into a high quality and high resolution finish on the server side works. Here's Nathan's test render from yesterday that proves our case, the image on the right is the result of merging 100 21-sample images together, in effect creating a 2100-sample image:

Finally, after months of work, testing, debugging and fixing we have Cycles as a supported engine on the farm. You'll get the power of Cycles through CPU rendering on our grid, with the supported feature set. For the past weeks I've been working on a new mechanism that handles our validation of results computed by our users.
We used to have a pixel-by-pixel comparison, with a small error tolerance hard-coded for the different file formats (PNG, EXR). The problem with such a comparison is that between different platforms the same rendering process can result in very small numerical differences. These differences are so small, that in most cases our eye can't distinguish between such results. jesterKing hat in den letzten Wochen an einem neuen Mechanismus zur Validierung der Ergebnisse gearbeitet. Während die bisherige auf einem Pixel-by-Pixel-Vergleich basierte, dessen Fehlertoleranz sehr klein war, basiert sie jetzt auf einem Modell, daß das menschliche visuelle System simuliert, bekannt als Wahrnehmungs-Differenz. Nach ein paar Tagen Auszeit wegen Hardwareproblemen ist die Homepage jetzt wieder verfügbar, allerdings steht bis jetzt nur das Grundgerüst. Forum und Konten fehlen noch. Das Layout scheint außerdem ein kleines Update erhalten zu haben.

Endlich mal wieder Neuigkeiten:

Lots has happened since autumn 2012. As you already may know, our old server said Good Bye to the world in a less than gracious way. Since then we've worked tremendously hard to get more done than we originally had planned to be done during autumn and first half winter.
Since the server died we decided to implement a few larger changes at the same time. Changes that I had expected to start working on around this time, end January, begin February. Most of our work is now nearing completion, with a few nuts to be ***** still. Some harder, some easier.
We started with changing the OS. Gentoo is no longer our basis, instead we're on the much saner Debian environment. Apart from OS change, we've made some distinct changes to our infrastructure, of which I won't go into much detail. But the new setup now allows us to scale up with comparatively small effort, as well as keep a sane path of features between our development tables and the production environment. Everywhere we work now each environment resembles each other as closely as possible, cutting down the risk of errors during deployment.
The most visible part to the user is of course the new front-end, the website http://www.renderfarm.fi/ itself. For this also big (as in REALLY BIG) changes have been made to all parts and aspects of it. While it looks still incomplete (probably, because it is), we're confident that the work done on the new platform serves as a solid base for Great Things To Come this year.
There is one large issue remaining still, and that is the final encoding step of rendered work. I'm working very hard on getting it fixed too, after which there will be again focus on getting actual sessions rendered again. The current batch of sessions that are already in the render queue will be restarted, both as a way to ensure every frame gets rendered correctly, and as a first stress test of the New Stuff.

Seit Herbst 2012 hat sich also viel getan. Der Grund für den längeren Ausfall des Projektes war ein kaputter Server. Seit dem Ausfall gab es dann einige Änderungen, ein neues OS (Debian-Umgebung), eine bessere Infrastruktur, neues Front-End etc. Derzeit wird das Encoding von gerenderter Arbeit generalüberholt. Wenn das geschafft ist, werden alle ausstehenden Sessions in der Renderqueue neu gestartet.
