A bit more than a year ago the SETI@home team was granted 24 hours at the Arecibo observatory to reobserve the best candidate locations detected by volunteers running the SETI@home screen saver. (For details, check out the Planetary Society's reports on the reobservations here.)
At Arecibo, we were able to observe 226 points on the sky, containing many of the best SETI@home candidates, several candidates found by the SERENDIP project, and some interesting astronomical objects, including a few known planetary systems and external galaxies.
We sent out the data resulting from these observations to our SETI@home volunteers (that means you). To people who got this data, there was no visible difference between it, and ordinary SETI@home data. For each of these work-units, we scanned the verified results for signals similar to the candidates.
One of the more difficult aspects of the analysis was determining whether a match to the candidate was good enough to be considered significant. We expected about a 10% chance that due to random noise a candidate would get a better score than it had originally.
In the process we found some bugs in our scoring algorithms. Now that we've sorted those out we can talk about our results. As we expected, for most candidates, no matching signals were found and therefore, their scores got worse. The exception was Gaussian candidates with a wide frequency window (non-barycentric Gaussians). Most of these got better scores. It turns out that because of the way SETI@home detects Gaussians, their candidate score is missing a mathematical term that all the other signal types have. We're looking for ways to derive the missing term so we can fix the problems with scores of these Gaussians.
For all of the other signal types, only one candidate was found whose score improved. (Remember, we expected about a 10% chance that we'd find one of these.) It is a Gaussian-type signal with a narrow frequency window. Normally, that would get us excited, but unfortunately, the properties of the signal don't seem consistent with a real signal. In a narrow frequency window, we would expect to find Gaussians with low Doppler drift rates (ones whose frequency is not changing rapidly with time). Unfortunately this Gaussian candidate consists of signals whose Doppler Drift rates are between 10 and 50 Hz per second. These would drift out of our 125 Hz matching window in a few seconds, so if we had looked at that part of the sky even a few seconds later (in any of our observations of this part of the sky), we wouldn't have found a match. Even so, we'll keep an eye on this spot on the sky.
The candidates we reobserved came from the first 2 years of SETI@home observations, so we've still got some work to do. We're working to identify a new set of candidates, and we will ask to be allowed to look at them with the Arecibo telescope. SETI@home will continue with a new software architecture (BOINC) and new hardware at Arecibo (ALFA, SERENDIP V) that will perform a comprehensive survey of the sky. |

Here's a quick end-of-the-year current status of things:
A few modifications to the database made on Monday caused it to slow down significantly (far more than expected). But this didn't really become noticeable until today. A lot of queries were backing up - at one point this morning we were unable to send out any work due to the backlog. As of now, things are slow but manageable - you may still find the web site a little more sluggish than usual. We're working on it.
We're hastily getting two new big servers on line. One will be the new BOINC database server. Our current server is maxed out at 2 old CPUs and 2 GB RAM. This new server will start with 2 CPUs that are 5 times faster and 8 GB RAM. Plus it has the ability to grow by 2 more CPUs and double the RAM if demand is high. As well, attached to it will be a hardware RAID for much faster disk I/O. The current server will then become the replica server. We need to get this working in order to keep up with increased demand as users migrate from classic SETI@home to BOINC.
The other server a Sun E3500 similar to our current E3500 which holds the master database (where all the scientific results are stored after they are validated). The storage on the current database is slow, bulky, and almost full. We will put much larger, more efficient disk arrays on the new E3500 and then transfer the database to it. This will vastly improve the speed of our back-end scientific analysis. |

Der andere Bediener eine Sonne E3500 ähnlich unserem gegenwärtigen E3500, das die Vorlagendatenbank hält (wo alle wissenschaftlichen Resultate gespeichert werden, nachdem sie validiert sind). Die Ablage auf der gegenwärtigen Datenbank ist langsam umfangreich, und fast voll. Wir setzen die viel größeren, leistungsfähigeren Scheibe Reihen auf das neue E3500 und bringen dann die Datenbank auf sie. Dieses verbessert in beträchtlichem Ausmaß die Geschwindigkeit unserer wissenschaftlichen Hinteranalyse. |

Yesterday at noon (20:00 UTC) we stopped the project to drop these indexes - a procedure we expected to take an hour, but ended up taking twelve! The servers were restarted at midnight (08:00 UTC) and everything is back to operating at top speed. |

Everything powered back up normally, except for one drive in the master science database, which failed upon booting up. Assimilating/splitting is turned off until we can figure out how to recover.
UPDATE: we were able to rescue the drive by replacing its circuit board (we figured the disks were good and had circuit boards fry in the past). However, there was slight data corruption in one of the pages on this disk, and therefore the database won't cleanly start. This is probably easy to fix, but we're waiting to hear back from the experts first.
FURTHER UPDATE: the disk has been completely recovered and we're checking database integrity now. Assimilating and splitting will start up again by tomorrow morning. |

Das habe ich auch schon festgestellt 
Nix mehr wird validiert. Habe momentan bei S@H, PP@H und E@H über 1000 granted Credits und alle WU's auf Pending, obwohl fast überall 3 oder 4 Results da sind. Da heisst es mal wieder warten
